2018 has witnessed many achievements by United Nations Project Office on Governance (UNPOG) since its relocation from Seoul to Incheon.

 

UNPOG has continued its efforts to provide capacity support for developing Member States in strengthening public institutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. During the 4th Quarter of 2018, UNPOG successfully organized the Regional Symposium on ‘Strengthening the Capacities of Public Institutions and Developing Effective Partnerships to Realize the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’ with participation by 200 people from 55 countries. We also welcomed the visit by Mr. Liu Zhenmin, Under-Secretary General (USG) for Economic and Social Affairs, to participate in the Regional Symposium and have a series of bilateral meetings with the Minister of the Interior and Safety, Minister of Personnel Management, Deputy Foreign Minister and the Executive Director of Green Climate Fund (GCF).   

 

While extending capacity support for developing Member States, UNPOG has been striving to become the knowledge hub on public institutional arrangements for policy coherence, building an inclusive society and digital government. We have completed the capacity needs assessment of Government Institutions to Implement the 2030 Agenda and Identification of Priority Areas for Capacity Development in the Asia and Pacific Region and Eastern Africa with findings and analysis and some good policy recommendations. We also conducted several researches on thematic issues including transforming civil servants’ mindsets for SDGs, data government for digital government and innovation in delivering public services to vulnerable groups. We will continue to conduct research pertinent to SDG 16 such as government innovation for social inclusion of vulnerable groups, future trends of smart digital government, digital government for women’s inclusion and participation in decision-making process.  

 

During 2018, UNPOG has successfully organized several outreach activities in Republic of Korea such as the 2nd Speech Contest on Youth Engagement and setting up several promotion booths on the occasion of other Korea government sponsored big events. The outreach activities effectively increased the visibility in Incheon and other regions in the country, which also helped raised the awareness of 2030 Agenda among the youth and other vulnerable groups.  

 

In 2019, UNPOG will continue its efforts to contribute to the capacity development of government institutions for achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with great support from the Government of Republic of Korea especially the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) and other international organizations.
