Secretary-General at Pyeongchang Olympics
António Guterres, Secretary-General (SG) of the United Nations, travelled the Republic of Korea (ROK) from February 7-10, 2018 in order to attend the opening ceremony of the 2018 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games. As the designated focal point of UN Agencies in the ROK, UNPOG coordinated with the Office of the UN Secretary-General and the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) to prepare the SG’s visit to the ROK. Mr. Chung Chae-Gun, Head of UNPOG, was designated as Acting Designated Official of the ROK. UN agencies specifically requested him to lead the coordination work in preparing the SG’s visit, including: i) welcoming the SG’s delegation at Incheon airport; ii) attending the advance field investigation to PyeongChang and general protocol briefing organized by the PyeongChang Organizing Committee; iii) supporting the preparation for bilateral meetings; and iv) arranging the SG’s meeting with all UN staff in the ROK.
