On 27 April 2023, DPIDG/UNPOG participated in a workshop of expert reviewers for the DRR-CCA Thought Leadership Course entitled "Synergizing Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA)," organized by UNDRR and UNSSC in Bonn. The governance of disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation is closely linked, however the two have historically evolved in parallel at both global and national levels. As a result, national DRR strategies and National Adaptation Plans are often developed independently of each other leading to suboptimal use of resources given the common risk-reducing and vulnerability-reducing objectives of both actions. The DRR-CCA Thought Leadership Course has been designed to address this issue with a focus on identifying key concepts and the synergies between Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Adaptation integrating DRR and CCA and identifying opportunities for enhanced DRR-CCA coherence. The Course will consist of one module which can be completed in 1-2 hours and is aimed at decision-makers and practitioners of DRR and CCA.
DPIDG/UNPOG made a substantive contribution to the course by linking it to the UN DESA Curriculum on Governance for the SDGs, ensuring that it aligns with international efforts to achieve sustainable development. The Course will be a valuable resource for those seeking to enhance their understanding of the relationship between disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation and identify opportunities to enhance their coherence.
The DRR-CCA Thought Leadership Course is currently under development and is expected to be available by June 2023.
