On 18 July 2023, one DPIDG/UNPOG staff participated as a resource person in the 4th webinar of the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) series, Building Resilient Urban Systems titled ‘Can disasters be avoided?’ and delivered a presentation on the topic of Leveraging Frontier Technologies for DRR and Resilience. The webinar generated significant interest from a global audience of policymakers and practitioners, with 144 attendees from 57 countries and territories actively engaged in the dialogue.
The Building Resilient Urban Systems webinar series supports implementation of the Political Declaration of the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework, which was adopted by countries at the UN General Assembly in May 2023. MCR2030 has successfully mobilized 28 national governments and 1,569 local governments, committed to strengthening disaster and climate resilience at the sub-national level. The webinar was organised by UNDP, in partnership with UNDRR, and delved into insightful discussions on approaches to preventing hazards from turning into disasters. It also looked at promising examples from a range of countries and discussed how ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking is helping countries and communities prevent adverse fallouts from hazard events.
