The 2018 UN Public Service Day, Forum and Awards (UNPSA) took place in Marrakesh, in the Kingdom of Morocco from 21- 23 June 2018, with the theme of “Transforming governance to realize the Sustainable Development Goals”.
The Forum allowed Ministers and other senior decision-makers to discuss how to transform governance and innovate the way governments, institutions and public administrations are organized and work to deliver the SDGs. During the Forum, UNPOG organized two out of total four workshops on: i) Governance of the future; ii) Governance to localize the SDGs; and iii) one special meeting on the Global Initiative for Schools of Public Administration: Mainstreaming the SDGs into curricula.
UNPOG supported and engaged in other events during the UN Public Service Forum to strengthen its visibility and partnerships.
The United Nations Public Service Forum, Day and Awards (UNPSA) celebrates the value and virtue of public service and highlights remarkable contributions in enhancing the role, prestige and visibility of public service. The event was initiated for the first time in 2003 in New York along with “UN Public Service Day,” and has been held annually on June 23rd for the past 16 years in different countries around the world.
UNPOG organized two workshops during the forum, titled “Governance of the future: challenges, opportunities and new frontier issues” and “Governance to localize the SDGs” respectively. The first workshop focused on exploring key features of future government practices to achieve the 2030 Agenda with innovative technology, including AI, deep-learning, IoT, and Big Data that can be integrated in public administration processes. The second workshop focused on addressing the current challenges in localizing the SDGs, and how to build capacities for effective decentralized governance for the 2030 Agenda.
Following the forum, awards are given in three categories: “Reaching the poorest and most vulnerable through inclusive services and partnerships”; “Making institutions inclusive and ensuring participation in decision-making”, and “Promoting gender-responsive public services to achieve the SDGs”. This year, 437 nominations from 79 countries were received for the 2018 UNPSA cycle.
The Provincial Government of Chungcheongnam-do won an award in category 2, “Making institutions inclusive and ensuring participation in decision-making” as part of the 2018 UNPSA. In July 2013, the Tax Administration Division of the Provincial Government of Chungcheongnam-do established an online fiscal information system on its website for the purpose of strengthening the disclosure of its revenues, budget, expenditure and settlement information to the public.
