Two UNPOG staff participated in the Third Session of the Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway Steering Committee and WSIS Regional Review, which was organized by UN ESCAP, in collaboration with ITU and the Internet Society, on 26-29 August 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand. The objectives of the AP-IS Steering Committee are to i) review the current implementation of the AP-IS Master Plan 2019-2022, ii) discuss the latest research findings and the emerging trends and technologies for evidence-based policy making, and iii) facilitate regional cooperation and policy dialogue in the development and implementation of the AP-IS subregional implementation plans.
One UNPOG staff participated as a panelist in the Asia-Pacific Regional Community Networks Summit, which was co-organized by UN ESCAP and the Internet Society on 29 August, in conjunction with the AP-IS Steering Committee meeting and WSIS Regional Review. As a panelist for the Plenary Session 2 on “Community Networks and SDGs”, the UNPOG staff exchanged views on how Community Networks can lead to promoting socio-economic development and achieving the SDGs at the local level and share the cases of enhancing citizen participation and local innovation via the community-led networks.
UNPOG/DPIDG's participation in the Committee meeting and other jointly held meetings provided a significant opportunity to understand the emerging trends and technologies in the Asia-Pacific region and to introduce the work of UNPOG/DPIDG in the area of ICT/digital government for development to Member States and other partner organizations, including ESCAP and ITU. It was also a valuable occasion to interact and network with other participants from government, private sector, IT industry, academia, and other UN agencies and regional/international organizations.
